Recipes in this book use grams and millilitres as primary measurements. The conversion table below lets you work with the tools you have. The pH table shows where common ingredients and products sit on the acidity scale.

Volume

Measurement conversions are a helpful guide, but ingredient weights can vary depending on density. The conversions are suitable for water and most water-based liquids.

For baking, preserving and homemade products where accuracy is important, we recommend weighing ingredients using kitchen scales.

Common DIY Batch Sizes

This chart is designed to help you choose the right batch size for your homemade creations. Actual yields can vary depending on ingredients, mixing methods, and packaging. When trying a new recipe, consider starting with a smaller batch before scaling up.

Essential Oil Dilution Guide

Target dilution by application; these rates reflect accepted industry practice for safe topical use. Every recipe also gives a specific quantity, so stick with the recipe amounts unless you’re adapting a formula.

Essential Oil Drop Guide

Approx. 20 drops = 1 ml = 1 g for most
essential oils. This varies slightly by oil density but is accurate enough for
recipe purposes.

pH Scale Reference

pHmeasures how acidic or alkaline a substance is, on a scale from 0 to 14. Pure water is neutral at 7. Below 7 is acidic. Above 7 is alkaline.

If you've ever wondered why some ingredients clean better, feel gentler on skin, or require pH adjustment, the answer often lies in their pH level. This guide provides approximate pH ranges for common DIY ingredients and products to help you make informed decisions when creating your own homemade solutions. Remember that these values are intended as a guide only and should not replace proper testing.

Target pH Ranges for Finished Products

Recipes that require pH adjustment include the target range and adjustment method in
the instructions. A digital pH meter gives the most accurate reading and is worth having if you're making personal care products regularly. pH strips work well enough for cleaning recipes.

You don’t need laboratory equipment. The list below covers almost everything for every recipe in the book, and most of it you probably already own.

Containers

Most products in this book can be stored in reusable amber glass containers, which help protect ingredients from light and can be washed and reused for years. For shower products, food-grade recycled PET (rPET) bottles offer a practical, shatter-resistant alternative. Wherever possible, we recommend reusable and recyclable packaging options to reduce waste and support a more sustainable home.
