What it is

Castile soap is a pure, plant-based liquid soap, traditionally made from vegetable oils with no synthetic detergents. It is one of three ingredients that run the whole cleaning side of the recipe bank, and one of the most versatile things you can keep on the shelf. Ready to use straight from the bottle, easy to dilute, scent or build on.

Castile soap turns up across the recipe bank, all free to read and make. Around the home: all-purpose spray cleaner, bathroom and kitchen cleaner, floor cleaner, gentle dishwashing liquid. On the body: hand wash, body wash, gentle facial cleanser, pet shampoo.

How far it goes

A 250 mL bottle makes roughly 10 to 25 batches, depending on dilution. Most recipes use 10 to 30 mL at a time. As a guide: 15 to 25 batches of all-purpose cleaner, 10 to 15 of hand or body wash, 10 to 12 of dishwashing liquid. A high-use, high-value staple.

Good to know

• Naturally thinner than commercial soap. That is normal.
• Don’t mix it with vinegar or any acid. The acid splits the soap and it curdles into a film that cleans nothing.
• If you dilute it further with water, it needs a preservative.
• Store sealed, out of extreme heat and cold.
