DIY Body Lotion
Making a proper emulsion — a stable mixture of oil and water — is the step that separates functional formulation from something that just looks like a product. Olivem 1000 is what makes it possible without synthetic emulsifiers. The result is a genuine body lotion with a silky texture and a formula you can read from first ingredient to last.
HERO INGREDIENT — Olivem 1000
Olivem 1000 is a plant-derived emulsifying wax made from olive oil, and it's one of the most elegant natural emulsifiers available to home formulators. It creates stable oil-in-water emulsions with a light, silky skin feel that most synthetic emulsifiers struggle to replicate. It also has documented skin-conditioning properties in its own right, which means it contributes to the formula's performance rather than just its structure.
WHAT ELSE IS IN THIS RECIPE
Sweet Almond Oil — carrier oil in the oil phase — provides the primary emollient conditioning of the lotion
Aloe Vera Gel — hydrating and soothing in the water phase — contributes to the light feel of the finished lotion
Vegetable Glycerin — humectant in the water phase that draws moisture to the skin and extends the hydrating effect after application
Geogard ECT — preservative essential in this water-containing formula — add below 40°C
Essential Oil — optional — choose something suited to daily full-body use; the blend on this page is our recommendation
I RECOMMEND TRYING IT WITH BOTANIC EMBER LIGHT
Body lotion is applied to large surface areas, which means the blend needs to work at a diluted concentration — Botanic Ember Light was designed for exactly that, staying readable and pleasing at the percentages appropriate for leave-on skin products. The Sweet Orange and Bergamot FCF open; the Cedarwood Atlas stays behind on skin in a way that makes the lotion feel complete rather than fleeting.
