DIY Drain Cleaner
Two ingredients and five minutes — that's all it takes to keep your drains running freely. I started making this when I realised what was in conventional drain cleaners, and I've never gone back. Bicarb and vinegar react the moment they meet, creating a fizzing action that breaks down grease and neutralises odours without a single synthetic chemical.
HERO INGREDIENT — Bicarbonate of Soda (Food Grade)
Bicarbonate of Soda is one of the hardest-working ingredients in the home. When it meets an acid like vinegar it produces carbon dioxide gas — that vigorous fizzing action is what physically dislodges build-up inside the pipe. It also neutralises odour-causing acids on contact, leaving drains smelling clean rather than masked.
WHAT ELSE IS IN THIS RECIPE
Cleaning Vinegar — provides the acid that reacts with bicarb to create the cleaning fizz, and dissolves mineral deposits and grease residue
Lemon Essential Oil — optional addition to the vinegar — adds a fresh citrus scent and mild antibacterial action
I RECOMMEND TRYING IT WITH LIFT
Lift is a sharp, high-energy blend of Eucalyptus, Lemon, Peppermint, Tea Tree, and Fir Needle — purpose-built to clean and clear. I use it here because the crisp, medicinal quality does something a drain cleaner should: it makes the space smell actively clean rather than just neutral.
