DIY Dry Shampoo Powder
Dry shampoo is one of those products that almost everyone buys and almost nobody thinks about making — which is a shame, because the commercial versions are mostly aerosol propellant and synthetic fragrance. This powder version uses two ingredients you can actually name, works just as well on oily roots, and smells like whatever you want it to.
HERO INGREDIENT — Organic Arrowroot Powder
Arrowroot Powder is a fine, silky starch derived from the Maranta plant, and it's the functional core of this recipe. It absorbs sebum and moisture from the scalp and hair shaft on contact, which is exactly what dry shampoo needs to do. Finer than cornstarch and with a more neutral scent, it distributes evenly through the hair without leaving a heavy or chalky residue.
WHAT ELSE IS IN THIS RECIPE
Kaolin Clay — soft white clay that adds absorbency to the formula and helps the powder cling to hair rather than falling straight through
Essential Oil — optional — works in this formula as a scent addition; press through the powder thoroughly to avoid concentrated spots
I RECOMMEND TRYING IT WITH BOTANIC EMBER LIGHT
Dry shampoo sits in the hair between washes, so the blend needs to be light, clean, and neutral enough to work with rather than against your own scent — Botanic Ember Light does that well. The Sweet Orange and Bergamot FCF keep it fresh and slightly citrus without reading as a perfume, which is the right register for a hair product.
