DIY Fruit & Vegetable Soak

A simple soak to clean fresh produce

Yield Per use  ·  Difficulty Beginner  ·  Time 10–15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Bicarbonate of Soda (Food Grade) per 2 litres of water
  • Cold tap water, about 2 litres (enough to submerge the produce)

Method

  1. Fill a clean basin or bowl with cold water; about 2 litres, enough to submerge your produce.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of Bicarbonate of Soda for every 2 litres of water and stir to dissolve.
  3. Submerge the fruit or vegetables and soak for 10–15 minutes.
  4. Rinse thoroughly under cold running water before use.

Equipment

  • Clean basin or large bowl

How to use

Use with all fresh produce before eating, cooking or storing. Do not soak very delicate herbs or mushrooms for the full time; a brief rinse in the solution is sufficient.

Storage

Mix fresh each time. Do not store the solution.

Safety

Always rinse thoroughly after soaking. Not a substitute for washing root vegetables with a brush. Keep out of reach of children.
