DIY Hair Mask
A weekly hair mask does what daily conditioning can't — it stays on long enough to actually penetrate the hair shaft rather than just coating the surface. This formula uses shea butter and Olivem 1000 to create a thick, stable emulsion that clings to hair during treatment and rinses clean without residue. Use it on the lengths and ends, not the scalp.
HERO INGREDIENT — Refined Shea Butter
Shea Butter contains a high proportion of unsaponifiable fatty acids — compounds that don't convert to soap and therefore remain intact to condition hair and skin. In a hair mask it provides deep emollient conditioning that penetrates the cortex of damaged or dry hair, improving elasticity and reducing breakage. The refined version has a neutral scent and lighter colour that suits formulation without altering the appearance of the final product.
WHAT ELSE IS IN THIS RECIPE
Olivem 1000 — plant-derived emulsifying wax that creates a stable, elegant emulsion — gives the mask its creamy, clinging texture
Jojoba Oil — carrier oil in the oil phase that provides lightweight conditioning and contributes to the emulsion structure
Aloe Vera Gel — hydrating and soothing in the water phase — helps the mask feel refreshing rather than heavy on the hair
Panthenol — Vitamin B5 that binds moisture within the hair shaft — add below 40°C to preserve its activity
Geogard ECT — preservative essential for this water-containing formula — add below 40°C
Essential Oil — optional — choose something complementary to your hair type; add with the preservative below 40°C
