DIY Upholstery Freshener Spray

A fabric-safe spray to neutralise odours and freshen soft furnishings

Yield 250 mL  ·  Difficulty Beginner  ·  Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 200 mL Distilled Water
  • 15 mL Polysorbate 20
  • 1 teaspoon Bicarbonate of Soda (Food Grade)
  • 2.5 mL Geogard ECT (about 1%)
  • 25–30 drops Essential Oil of choice

Method

  1. Dissolve the Bicarbonate of Soda in a small amount of warm Distilled Water in a small jug.
  2. In a separate container, combine the Polysorbate 20 and Essential Oil. Mix until fully blended.
  3. Combine both mixtures in the spray bottle.
  4. Add the Geogard ECT and stir through.
  5. Top up with the remaining Distilled Water. Seal and swirl gently.
  6. Check the finished pH with a test strip; it should read 8 or below so the preservative stays effective. If it reads higher, stir in a pinch of citric acid and re-check.
  7. Label with product name, date made, and ‘Shake before use’.

Equipment

  • 250 mL spray bottle
  • Small measuring jug
  • Small bowl for pre-mixing

How to use

Shake before use. Hold the bottle 20–30 cm from the fabric and mist lightly. Allow to dry fully before use. Test on a hidden area first. Not suitable for silk, velvet or dry-clean-only fabrics.

Storage

Store in a cool, dark place. Use within 3–6 months. Shake before use.

Safety

Test on a hidden area first; some fabrics can react to water-based sprays. Not suitable for silk, velvet or dry-clean-only fabrics. Allow to dry fully before use. Keep away from open flames. Keep out of reach of children.
