DIY Hair Shampoo
The average commercial shampoo contains 15–25 ingredients, many of which exist to counteract the harshness of the primary surfactant. This formula takes a different approach — two mild surfactants that work together rather than one aggressive one that needs fixing. The result cleans effectively, doesn't strip natural oils, and works on all hair types.
HERO INGREDIENT — Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Cocamidopropyl Betaine is an amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut oil — it carries both positive and negative charges, which makes it exceptionally gentle on both hair and scalp. It creates a richer, creamier lather than Castile Soap alone and significantly reduces the potential for irritation. It's the ingredient that takes this formula from functional to genuinely pleasant to use.
WHAT ELSE IS IN THIS RECIPE
Liquid Castile Soap — plant-based surfactant that provides the primary cleansing action and combines with CAPB for a complete, balanced formula
Vegetable Glycerin — humectant that keeps the scalp and hair hydrated during washing, preventing the tight feeling some shampoos cause
Geogard ECT — preservative essential in any water-based formula — keeps the shampoo stable and safe throughout its shelf life
Essential Oil — optional — choose something complementary to the scent of the blend on this page, or a single oil that suits your hair type
I RECOMMEND TRYING IT WITH BOTANIC EMBER LIGHT
Shampoo is rinsed out, so the blend needs to leave an impression quickly — Botanic Ember Light's citrus-forward opening does exactly that in the time it's on your scalp. The Cedarwood Atlas lingers just long enough to make the result feel considered rather than generic.
