DIY Stone-Safe Cleaner

A pH-neutral cleaner safe for marble, granite, travertine and slate

If you have marble, granite, travertine or slate in your home, this is the only spray you should be using. Conventional cleaners, and everything with vinegar or citrus in it, will slowly etch natural stone. This formula is pH-neutral, gentle and does the job without costing you the surface.

Yield 500 mL · Difficulty Beginner · Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 470 mL Distilled Water
  • 20 mL Liquid Castile Soap
  • 5 mL Vegetable Glycerin

Method

  1. Sanitise the spray bottle.
  2. Add the Liquid Castile Soap and Vegetable Glycerin to the bottle.
  3. Slowly add the Distilled Water. Swirl gently; do not shake vigorously.
  4. Label with product name, date made, and ‘Stone-safe; no vinegar or citrus’.

Equipment

  • 500 mL spray bottle (clean)
  • Measuring jug
  • Soft microfibre cloth

How to use

Spray onto stone surface. Wipe with a soft, damp microfibre cloth. Rinse with clean water and buff dry. Safe for daily use on sealed and polished stone.

Storage

Store in a cool, dark place. Use within 6 months. Do not store near vinegar-based products.

Safety

Never add vinegar, lemon or citrus essential oils; they will permanently etch natural stone. Test on a hidden area before general use. Not suitable for unsealed stone. Keep out of reach of children.

What else is in this recipe

  • Vegetable Glycerin adds a small amount of slip and helps the formula spread evenly across polished surfaces without streaking
  • Distilled Water mineral-free water prevents limescale deposits on polished stone surfaces
